Introducing TakePart’s Homegrown Kitchen

We get questions from readers almost every day here at TakePart asking how they can take small steps to reduce their dependence on the industrial food chain and change the way they and their loved ones eat. We thought, what better way to get ready for the warmer months than by showing you just how easy it is to make and grow the items you usually buy at the grocery store—just like our grandparents used to do.

So today we’re excited to introduce you to TakePart’s Homegrown Kitchen, the series that celebrates the joy and fun of ditching the weekly fight for a parking spot at the grocery store. We’re showing you simple steps to start raising backyard chickens, planting a kitchen garden, finding heirloom seeds, and composting at home.

But we’ve also got expert tips from Kevin West of and Jessica Koslow of L.A.’s Sqirl cafe on canning and preserving all of the great seasonal produce you can gather from your backyard (or your favorite farmers market) this summer.

And we’ve even got easy instructions for making greener cleaning supplies at home so you won’t have to keep using harmful chemicals in your new Homegrown Kitchen.

Check out all of our experts’ suggestions, and let us know in the comments section below if you have a few of your own.
