(KRON) — Police arrested an intoxicated man for shooting a handgun in a residential parking lot on Monday, the San Rafael police department said.

Vehicle engulfed in flames on Bay Bridge

San Rafael PD received calls at approximately 9 a.m. about possible gunshots being fired in the 300 block of Canal Street in San Rafael.

Callers said a witness observed a man firing multiple shots toward the ground before throwing his handgun into a car, police said.

With the help of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office UAV Drone Unit, officials were able to locate the man in the car he threw the handgun in.

Upon approaching the suspect in the car, police noticed he was “unresponsive in the driver’s seat,” police said.

“Due to the necessity to safeguard the public,” officers approached the vehicle in an armored shield. Officers attempted to make the man follow directions, but he was uncooperative.

Police then opened the car door and took the man into custody. The man was identified as Nardo Deleon, a 57-year-old San Rafael resident.

No injuries were reported, and Deleon was booked into the Marin County Jail, police said.
