BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Gov. Wes Moore announced on Wednesday that 2023 set a new record for international passenger travel at the BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, surpassing the previous record from 2018.

1,365,847 passengers traveled internationally through the airport situated just outside of Baltimore — a number that is 2.5% higher than 2018’s record.

“We’re working hard to enhance the travel experience for our passengers while supporting a growing air service portfolio,” Paul Wiedefeld, Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary, said.

The airport has expanded to offer service from more international carriers, such as Copa Airlines, Icelandair, and PLAY airlines. The newest international carrier is Bermudair, the flagship airline for Bermuda, which started routes on Monday.

“BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport is a world class transportation hub and we’re excited to welcome BermudAir to our region,” Wiedefeld said.

These expansions have made large economic gains for Maryland. As the busiest airport in the region, it provided over 107,000 jobs and brought $11.3 billion to the region in 2023.

“BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport is a key economic driver and international gateway for our region,” Moore said. “We’re making Maryland more competitive, and BWI is helping us lead the way by boosting tourism, creating jobs, and expanding business opportunities for our communities.”
