Intermountain Connect Care is improving patient access to physical therapy

MURRAY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – Scott Shulman got together one summer evening to enjoy a friendly game of kickball with a local non-profit he regularly volunteers with. The field was filled with laughter and the echoes of the playful shouts of other players when a sudden jerk and a sharp pain made Scott’s joy short-lived.

He had pulled his hamstring, turning the remainder of his Wednesday night into a painful ordeal.

By Thursday morning, Scott was ready for solutions. With his wife’s encouragement, he decided to explore an option he’d only just heard about – Intermountain Connect Care Physical Therapy.

Hesitant, but seeking relief, he embarked on this digital adventure.

The process was nothing short of surprising. In less than three minutes, Scott was speaking face-to-face (virtually) with a physical therapist.

“It was very quick and very easy,” Scott said, recalling the event. “The physical therapist was attentive, kind, and listened to my concerns.”

In an era of prolonged waiting periods and exhaustive procedures, Intermountain Connect Care Physical Therapy has emerged as an option for swift, effective care.

Intermountain Connect Care Physical Therapy is changing the way residents of Utah perceive and access physical therapy. The service is available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, and 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturdays.

Commonly treated conditions include back pain, neck pain, whiplash, ankle sprain, muscle strain/soreness, joint Pain (hip, knee, shoulder, elbow), sports injury, and heel pain.

Instead of the anticipation and anxiety of waiting rooms, Scott was comfortably seated in his own home, recounting his pain points and medical history to a licensed physical therapist.

The therapist attentively assessed Scott’s condition, inquired about the onset of his injury, and gauged the pain’s intensity.

By the end of the session, Scott not only had a clear diagnosis but also received tailored exercises and stretches to aid his recovery. He remarked, “It was overall a very good experience. It was informative and EASY!”

“Our goal has always been to provide patients quick access to high quality services that reduce the overall cost of care,” said Steven Moffit, an operations director with Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation. “With this partnership with Intermountain Connect Care and Select Health, this service allows us to reach patients without the barriers of distance or schedule. It’s another example of how Intermountain is providing value for our communities.”

Intermountain Connect Care focuses on providing low-cost, high quality, and convenient care,” said Tim Lovell, director of operations for Intermountain Connect care.

“We are excited to partner with the Rehab program on this new service. Thanks to Select Health and the Intermountain benefits team, these visits are available at no cost for many Select Health members as part of the Connect Care benefit. We hope to be able to expand this option soon to patients in other Intermountain states.”

“Intermountain Connect Care Physical Therapy is a testament to Intermountain Health’s commitment to prioritizing the patient’s experience,” added Lovell.

Scott’s journey is just one among the many who have benefitted from Connect Care Physical Therapy’s seamless interface and unparalleled care.

Today, he is back on the field, playing kickball, and living his healthiest life. A walking testament to the potential of virtual physical therapy.
