Interagency workgroup fights human trafficking across Commonwealth

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — The Shapiro Administration announced Monday they are working hand in hand with the Pennsylvania Interagency Workgroup to take steps toward fighting human trafficking.

The Pennsylvania Interagency Human Trafficking Workgroup hosted a human trafficking advocacy day on Monday and convened a panel at the state capitol building in Harrisburg, where the Workgroup members were met by survivors, advocates, and elected officials to discuss the current issues they face in the battle against human trafficking.

Expanding the alliance committed to fighting human trafficking in Pennsylvania uncovers more of these devastating crimes and strengthens the network of care for victims. After all, brave survivors who come forward and tell their stories help others from becoming victims and enable law enforcement to prosecute predators. This event, along with my office’s recently-launched Human Trafficking Section, show there is much strength in numbers, and we look forward to continuing this fight with local, state, and federal partners.”

The PA Office of Attorney General Human Trafficking Section, led by Chief Deputy Attorney General Heather Castellino, is taking a multi-disciplinary approach to addressing and prosecuting human trafficking crimes, as these crimes usually cross jurisdictional lines between state and federal agencies.

“The shadow of human trafficking is ever present on American roadways. We’re proud to work with partners across the state to improve safety for travelers, and we implore Pennsylvanians to learn and share the signs of human trafficking,” said PennDOT Secretary, Mike Carroll.

The Human Trafficking Interagency Workgroup is currently made up of about two dozen agencies and advocacy groups to coordinate human trafficking prevention and awareness efforts across the Commonwealth.
