Great news for you and all the exes you still follow on social media (because unfollowing or blocking would be too dramatic, giving them a precious victory in the breakup): Instagram-the social media app where we're all perpetually tanned, toned, and still on vacation in Oaxaca, or Reykjavík, or Mykonos-is finally introducing a mute feature.

As anyone too addicted to their timeline knows, we all have friends who we love in the real world, but can't stand in the fake one. Maybe it's too many beach shots ("Take me back"). Maybe their filters just suck. Whatever the case, social norms dictate that an unfollow goes beyond a simple indictment of their photography skills, and attacks who they are as a person entirely. It often leads to an awkward conversation (or never speaking again, at all) the next time you cross paths. But by sneakily keeping their photos out of sight and out of mind, nobody's feelings get hurt.

Instagram plans to roll the mute button out "over the coming weeks," and like Twitter or Facebook or even Instagram's current "Stories" feature, people you mute won't know you did it, and you can mute or un-mute them at any time.

Here's to never having the "why'd you unfollow me?" talk with a friend or ex ever again.
