Inside DWTS Star Mark Ballas and BC Jean’s ‘Timeless Bohemian’ Wedding — Complete with a Drum Circle!

One day wasn’t enough to contain Mark Ballas and BC Jean’s wedding celebration.

“It was a three-day affair,” Ballas says of the festivities, which are featured exclusively in the current issue of PEOPLE.

The festivities started Nov. 23 with a rehearsal dinner thrown by the parents of the Dancing with the Stars pro.

“It was great that so much of my family was able to come,” says Ballas, 30. “It was like a reunion.”

The next day brought a Thanksgiving feast for the wedding party, which included Ballas’ DWTS costar and best friend, Derek Hough.

“After we ate, we had a drum circle on the beach with two live flamenco guitar players,” says Ballas, who proposed to his Alexander Jean bandmate a day before Thanksgiving 2015. “It was just wild.”

For the actual wedding on Nov. 25, the 29-year-old bride says the couple “went for an earthy vibe” and exchanged vows at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu in front of a 100-year-old oak tree and had and sage and jasmine burning during the ceremony.

“We did a very eclectic, boho-chic design with rustic hints that created a very elegant and personalized look,” says celebrity events planner David Tutera, who helped Ballas and Jean plan the big day alongside Slomique Hawrylo.

As musicians, the music at the ceremony was important to the couple. Ballas and Jean’s families walked down the aisle, which was lined with “bohemian carpets,” to Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” Mark and his groomsmen walked to a Vitamin String Quartet cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” while Jean’s bridesmaids walked to a cover of The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony.” The bride walked with her father to an original cover of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and after the vows, the couple walked with their 2-year-old rescue dog Hendrix to an original cover of The Beatles’ “Come Together.”

The guest list for the big day read like a list of DWTS all-star season. Among the 160 guests — who were sent custom invitations by Invitations by Dawn — were Julianne Hough, Cheryl Burke, Valentin Chermkovskiy, Sasha Farber, Emma Slater, Sharna Burgess, Allison Holker, Stephen “tWitch” Boss, Candace Cameron Bure, Leah Remini, Alfonso Ribeiro and Kristi Yamaguchi.

“There was so much dancing,” Jean (née Brittany Jean Carlson) says of the reception, which was decorated with Mille Fiori Floral Design flowers and La Tavola Fine Linen décor.

The outdoor party continued until around 11 p.m., but the celebration continued late into the night with an after party.

“We had so much fun,” says Jean. “We keep saying we’re going to have to get everyone together again next year to celebrate our anniversary.”

“Nothing is different but we feel like things have been elevated a bit,” says Ballas, who currently stars as Frankie Valli in Broadway’s Jersey Boys, of being married. “It just keeps getting better and better. It just feels more special.”
