Inmate death under investigation in Pittsylvania County

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Virginia State Police and Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) have launched an investigation after a man died at a jail in Pittsylvania County on May 14.

The Sheriff’s Office says around 11:40 a.m. on Tuesday, deputies alerted staff that 28-year-old Dustin Spake was slumped over in his cell. Staff along with several deputies immediately entered the cell and began performing CPR.

Jail medical staff, Pittsylvania County’s Emergency Medical Services, and Chatham EMS members responded and began rendering aid to Spake. However, their efforts were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at 12:35 p.m.

The Sheriff’s Office says Spake was arrested on April 22, for a misdemeanor charge for allegedly assaulting a family member. He was granted a $10,000 secured bond but did not post bond.

As a result, Spake was booked into the facility and provided an initial medical and mental health screening. During this time, the PSCO said medical staff did not find any sign of medical distress or noticed any signs in the coming days.

Sheriff Taylor and the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office send their sincere condolences to Mr. Spake’s friends and family.
