72-year-old dies in I335 crash south of Topeka

TOPEKA (KSNT) – A 72-year-old man died in a crash on I335 Monday morning.

Around 1 a.m. on Monday, a 2015 Mercedes M-Class was driving north in the southbound lane of I335. A 22-year-old man was driving a 2022 Freightliner semi-truck in the southbound lane. The 22-year-old was unable to avoid the Mercedes. The vehicles collided and the Mercedes caught on fire, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol crash log.

A 72-year-old man named Michael Goering died in the crash. The man’s next of kin was notified, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

After being hit by the Mercedes M-Class, the Freightliner was disabled in both lanes of traffic. Another man driving a 2009 Mercedes C-Class was heading south and saw the Freightliner too late and attempted to avoid it. The driver ran into the back of the Freightliner’s power unit and came to a rest against a barrier wall, according to the crash log.

The two occupants of the Mercedes C-Class were taken to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Two of the passengers in the Mercedes C-Class were transported to an area hospital with suspected serious injuries, according to the KHP.

I335 southbound was closed until 7:15 a.m. due to the crash, according to Kandrive.org.
