Injured man provided no credible leads in Oneonta shooting

Apr. 12—Oneonta police said Friday that the man who reported that he sustained a gunshot wound while on Chestnut Street Wednesday night hasn't provide any credible leads — although police did not elaborate on what kind of leads investigators were seeking.

At about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday, A.O. Fox Hospital emergency room staff called police to report a gunshot wound.

At the hospital, police officers learned that 51-year-old John E. Walley, of Otego, had been transported to the hospital by a third party in a private vehicle, according to information from police released Friday.

The person that transported Mr. Walley to the hospital left the scene in the vehicle prior to the arrival of police.

Police interviewed Walley, who said that he was on Chestnut Street when he was injured by a bullet. He provided details of where he was when the alleged incident occurred.

All of the leads provided by Walley were found to be false, according to police.

Police officers investigated all leads and re-interviewed Walley, however he refused any further cooperation.

There are no additional leads or witnesses.

The case will be closed, but may be re-opened should additional information be received and the victim agrees to cooperate, police said.
