The ingenious way ‘Star Trek Beyond’ is making sure its script doesn’t leak online
In between Star Wars movies, we’ll get a new Star Trek movie this year that marks the 50th anniversary of the iconic series. Star Trek Beyond debuts on July 22nd this year, but many details about it are still unknown.
In fact, it looks like secrecy around the movie is so tight that the actors have customized script copies that contain certain typos and errors that could identify the source of a potential leak. Even so, the cast of the new Star Trek movie did reveal some secrets about the upcoming film.

“We got red scripts that have our names printed on them,” said Karl Urban, who plays Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy in the movie. “There are specific spelling mistakes incorporated into each draft, so that if it were to get out, they could still track it back to whose script it was.”
The action in Star Trek Beyond takes place in space – no huge surprise there, after all, space is the final frontier – but Entertainment Tonight revealed in a series of videos that the crew will be in space for two years into their mission when the movie starts off. That means there’s some wear and tear to reflect all that, although only a specific detail is offered. Sulu (John Cho) has a daughter he misses a lot, and she’s apparently important for the story.
“At the beginning of the movie, we’re all homesick, we’re all getting into our ruts, and I think we’ve been around each other too long,” Cho said about the movie. “Sulu has a heartache for his little baby. [He] had brought his picture to his console, which technically, we’ve been saying, it’s unprofessional. It’s in the way of the buttons.”
Other details revealed in the Entertainment Tonight clips include the new uniforms, which are supposed to be a tribute to the original Star Trek.
“It’s a little retro, which I really like,” Urban told the site. “The designers have done a wonderful job of giving a lovely nod to Star Treks of the past.”
