COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) – There is new information about the bicyclist that was hit and killed by a train on Thursday.

The incident happened on the railroad tracks on Baston Road — near where Baston and Washington Roads intersect.

The victim was identified as 66-year-old Dwayne Carter. Carter was known to ride his bike regularly in the area.

Some people tell News Channel 6 that they saw Carter ducking under the arms blocking those tracks, when he got stuck., and that is when the train hit him.

A CSX Spokesperson told News Channel 6:

“…Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this tragic incident. We remind the public to always practice safe behavior around the railroad track. Trains are often moving faster than they appear and cannot stop quickly.”

Some people who spoke to Channel 6 say they think it was a freak accident and is a good lesson for others to be cautious of trains.

“Yesterday’s action I don’t know exactly what took place whether the bicycle just got stuck in the tracks or whatever the case may have been, but you know bad timing,” said Carl Sanders, Augusta local.

Sanders has worked in this area and knows many people who have been hurt in this general area of the train tracks.

“This is the third accident that I know of that’s actually taken place where somebody’s gotten killed,” said Sanders. “Two of them bicycles, and the third one is actually a friend of mines’ son. For some reason this section of tracks just hasn’t been really good to several people.”

CSX shared a few safety tips for bicyclist that may be going across train tracks which are:

“Crossing tracks on a bicycle requires caution and extra attention, use only designated railroad crossings, turn off music and remove all earphones at all railroad crossings, wet train tracks can be slippery, watch out for the second train, and if you see a train coming, WAIT.”
