  • Influencer Victoria Paris intentionally damaged a $4,980 Gucci bag to make it look fashionably worn.

  • She posted a TikTok video of herself throwing the bag, and many users deemed the act wasteful.

  • Scuffed bags are now trendy, with photos of the Olsen twins carrying torn Hermès bags circulating.

Influencer Victoria Paris unboxed a shining new Gucci bag in a TikTok video on April 1.

Nearly a month later, on April 30, she shared a video of herself throwing that same designer bag against wooden stairs.

The TikToker with 1.9 million followers wrote across her now-deleted video — which has since been reposted and received over 950,000 views — that she was "Olsen twin Jane Birkining" her purse, or intentionally damaging it to make it appear fashionably worn and torn.

It's unclear if Paris purchased or was gifted the Jackie 1961 Large Shoulder bag, which retails for $4,980. Paris did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

But naturally, many people on the social-media platform took issue with Paris' method of adding scuff marks to the purse.

TikTokers specifically questioned why the influencer intentionally damaged the purse rather than allowing it to crease, scuff, and slouch from regular wear.

"Like why not just …. simply use the bag to make it seem….. used?" one person commented on a reposted clip of Paris throwing her bag.

Some also criticized Paris for seemingly spending a large amount of money on a material item just to damage it.

"Seeing that while I'm sitting here in pain because I can't afford to get a root canal & a new dental crown…pisses me off," another person wrote.

So what do the Olsen twins and Jane Birkin have to do with Paris throwing her purse against the steps?

Let's start with Birkin. The late actor and singer inspired Jean-Louis Dumas to create a namesake bag for Hermès in the early '80s.

It became an expensive accessory and one of the most popular fashion status symbols on the market, with enduring popularity today.

Birkin was also a big fan of the bag she inspired and regularly decorated hers with keychains, stickers, and other quirky pieces.

Fashion fans on TikTok have now taken to doing the same with their purses, calling the accessory technique the "Jane Birkin effect."

Paris, for example, added a few keychains to her Gucci bag before damaging it.

Then there's Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

TikTokers recently noticed that Hermès bags carried by the famous twins are far from pristine. In fact, photos from 2009 show their purses covered with scuffs, scratches, and worn edges.

While many have appreciated how the Olsens use their designer bags practically, some also say they like the appearance of used bags better than new ones — a sentiment Paris seemingly agrees with.

Paris hasn't publicly commented on her Gucci bag or any backlash she's received.

The video that shows her throwing her purse was on her page as of Sunday night but deleted by Monday morning.
