Avengers: Infinity War is loosely based on the classic comic The Infinity Gauntlet, but we assumed that it would be steering clear of most of the eccentric plot beats in that story.

So the latest trailer for the MCU film surprised us by revealing that a major thread from the comic would appear in the film – Thanos's desire to eradicate half the population of the universe.

"The entire time I knew him, he only ever had one goal," says Zoe Saldana's Gamora – who just happens to be the villain's adopted daughter – in the opening of the teaser.

"To wipe out half the universe.

"If he gets all the Infinity Stones, he can do it with the snap of his fingers. Just like that."

It had already been hinted that Thanos had early in his life seen the harm of overpopulation on his home of Titan. But we didn't think that it would translate directly into a plot to kill 50% of all living beings. We'd really like to see the science-based reasoning that brought him to that nice round number.

In Jim Starlin, George Pérez and Ron Lim's Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos's plan is intended to woo the totally uninterested object of his affections, the personification of Death.

Eradicating half of all living things already feels goofy enough, and luckily there's no indication that we'll have to watch Josh Brolin flirting with a busty skeleton throughout the movie. Not yet, anyway.

In the comics, Thanos actually did fulfil his master plan, but luckily the Infinity Stones combined are so powerful that they could bring everyone back to life too, which was very convenient.

Avengers: Infinity War is released in UK cinemas on April 26 and US cinemas on April 27.
