Infant killed in 3-vehicle crash near Lake Sara

Apr. 25—Illinois State Police responded to a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Lake Sara Road and Moccasin Road in Effingham Wednesday.

ISP reported a 1999 white Ford truck was traveling east on Moccasin Road approaching a 2004 yellow Ford car, which was stopped behind a 2021 gray Ford truck, when the driver of the white Ford truck, a 40-year-old from Mason, failed to reduce speed and struck the car. The car then struck the rear of the gray Ford truck. All three vehicles came to rest in the middle of the intersection.

The Mason man refused medical treatment. The driver of the car, a 28-year-old man from Beecher City, was airlifted to a regional hospital with severe injuries. An 8-month-old passenger in the car was pronounced dead at the scene by Effingham County Coroner Kim Rhodes. The driver of the gray truck, a 77-year-old man from Effingham, reported no injuries. However, a passenger in his vehicle, a 70-year-old female from Effingham, was transported by ambulance to an area hospital with minor injuries.

The Mason man was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident. ISP did not release names. An investigation is ongoing.
