Indianapolis Colts select Kansas State cornerback Julius Brents in 2023 NFL Draft

Kansas State football fans didn’t have to wait long to find out where Julius Brents was heading in the NFL Draft on Friday.

Brents, a dynamic 6-foot-4 cornerback, is off to the professional ranks as a member of the Indianapolis Colts.

Indianapolis selected him with the No. 44 overall pick, which came in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft at Union Station in Kansas City.

It is easy to understand why the Colts had interest in Brents. After beginning his college football career at Iowa he became an exciting playmaker as a member of Kansas State’s defense.

The long and athletic defensive back was a multi-year starter for the Wildcats and he finished his time in Manhattan with 94 tackles to go along with five interceptions.

Most projected Brents as a middle-round pick when he said goodbye to K-State following the Sugar Bowl last December, but his stock rapidly climbed after he went to the NFL Draft Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and put up eye-popping numbers in terms of strength and speed.

Some thought he might go as early as the first round.

That didn’t happen. Still, it’s not easy to find long and athletic defensive backs who can move with speed, so many will expect Brents to make an impact at the next level.

Brents will no doubt be excited to continue his football career with the Colts. He is originally from Indianapolis, and he has always dreamed about playing for his hometown team.

Brents is the second former K-State football player to get selected in this NFL Draft. He joins defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah, who was picked by the Kansas City Chiefs with the final pick of the first round on Thursday.
