Indiana woman falls ill, dies on flight back to the U.S. from Dominican Republic

A woman from Indiana died in late February after falling ill on a commercial flight from the Dominican Republic to North Carolina.

The 41-year-old-woman from Indiana fell ill during the American Airlines flight from Punta Cana. Air Traffic Control requested medical assistance for her around 6:15 p.m. on Feb. 28.

The Royal Turks and Caicos Island Police Force shared in a statement on Facebook that the flight diverted to Turks and Caicos so the woman could receive medical assistance. The woman was already receiving CPR on the plane at the time of the call from Air Traffic Control.

Medical and police were dispatched and the patient was transported to Cheshire Hall Medical Centre, where she was pronounced dead. Authorities said an autopsy was to be performed to determine the woman's cause of death.

The woman was identified on social media by her friends and family as Stefanie Smith of Danville.
