Incumbents win contested races in local village elections

Mar. 19—In contested races for village trustees in New Berlin, Otego and Unadilla, incumbents staved off challengers, while results were not known in Fleischmanns as of press time.

Residents Chenango, Delaware and Otsego counties headed to the polls Tuesday, March 19, to elect village mayors, trustees and a village justice. Village elections in Schoharie County are in November, while elections in Oxford are in June. There were no elections in Afton, Hobart, Cherry Valley and Gilbertsville this year.

Johanna VanDeusen was elected as the new mayor in the village of Franklin.

The following is a list of candidates by county, then village.

Chenango County

Bainbridge, Earlville, Greene and Sherburne — Results were not known as of press time.

New Berlin — Maryellen Canuel received 46 votes and David Smith received 55 votes to defeat Anthony DiCarlo's 21 votes for the two, two-year positions. Joshua Burchill received 57 votes for the one-year unexpired trustee position. Lisa Seradilla received one write-in vote for the two-year position and three write-in votes for the one-year position.

Smyrna — Penny Eggleston received seven votes for her reelection bid for her trustee position.

Delaware County

Fleischmanns and Stamford — Results were not known as of press time.

Delhi — Jeremy Fitch received 43 votes and Barbara Sturdevant received 40 votes for the two-year trustee positions.

Franklin — VanDeusen received 28 votes. Constance Martin received 27 votes for the two-year trustee position.

Hancock — Dorothy Picozzi received 21 votes and Jason Mead received 22 votes for the two, two-year trustee positions. Ricky Kuehn received 22 votes for a one-year trustee position. Last year Shaun Shannon was on the ballot as a trustee but was elected mayor through a write-in campaign. James Picozzi received 22 votes to be elected village justice to fill a two-year vacancy left by the death of the former justice.

Margaretville — David Budin and Jeffrey Warren each received 23 votes to be reelected to their two-year trustee positions.

Sidney — Thomas Hoskins received 26 votes to fill the vacancy of an unexpired three-year trustee position.

Walton — There were two, two-year trustee positions on the ballot. Steve Condon and Steven Sehen were elected, but vote totals were not provided by the clerk.

Cooperstown, Milford and Richfield Springs — Results were not known as of press time.

Laurens — Jonathan Heelein received 12 votes and Lois VanAlstine received 13 votes for the two, two-year trustee positions.

Morris — Michael Newell was elected mayor with nine votes, and Rush French was elected trustee with 10 votes.

Otego — Incumbents David Clapper, with 57 votes, and James Salisbury, with 62 votes, defeated challenger Franco Rubera, who received 42 votes for the two, two-year trustee positions.

Unadilla — Mayor Jason "Jake" Cotten received 75 votes in his reelection bid. Paul Baldwin, who received 70 votes, and Jacqueline Carey, who received 66 votes, defeated Jeffrey Jones, who received 18 votes for two, two-year trustee positions. Chris Price received two write-in votes, and Robert Ackerly and Rodney Renwick each received one write-in vote.
