Incumbent Nausėda claims decisive victory in Lithuanian Presidential election, Zelenskyy congratulated him

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda will remain president after easily winning the second round of the presidential election on May 26.

The incumbent Nausėda won a decisive 74.64% of the vote, while his challenger, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, won 23.85%, with counting completed in 98.9% of polling stations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated Nausėda on his victory.

Šimonytė has already admitted defeat and congratulated Nauseda on the victory, LRT reported.

"I would like to congratulate the elected president of Lithuania," she said.

Šimonytė said she would return to her job as prime minister on Monday. She said she didn't believe her position as PM helped her during the campaign.

The first round of presidential elections was held in Lithuania on May 12.

Incumbent Nausėda finished first with nearly 44% of the vote, with PM Šimonytė receiving 20%.

Russia and China were preparing to influence the outcome of the Lithuanian elections, Lithuanian Special Service warned ahead of the election.

Besides disinformation campaigns and cyberattacks, the government warned about false claims that polling stations were mined to disrupt the vote or influence the results, State Security Department director, Darius Jauniškis, said.
