Incumbent David Campbell won the three-way contest for the May 21 Democratic primary for the Chatham County Coroner, according to 2024 Chatham County Election Results.

Campbell garnered 10,582 votes, or 65.68%, and more than 6,764 votes than his nearest challenger, J. Vernard Flowers.

Charles O’Berry, the general manager of Adams Funeral Service and the third Democratic challenger, garnered just under 11% of the vote.

Campbell has served as coroner since Jan. 1, 2021, after he defeated Dr. Charles Pugh in November 2020.

Campbell will face Republican Tiffany Williams, who worked for the Chatham County Coroner’s Office from 2002 through December 2022. Williams worked with three coroners ― Dr. James Metts, Dr. William Wessinger, and Campbell ― before resigning. She works as an executive assistant and documentation specialist at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors. Williams, who ran unopposed, garnered 9,581 votes.

Campbell ran on a platform of continuity and responsiveness, including burying more than 500 people’s previously unclaimed cremains on Oct. 26, 2022. He cited the construction of the new county morgue at 4225 Augusta Road in Garden City in December 2022, which he said could house 60 to 80 bodies at one time.
