CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Inmates at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center-Central (MCDCC) are coming down with some sort of illness, according to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).

Officials say they are monitoring the situation after seeing an “increase in illness” among a “limited number” of inmates.

The illness was initially reported on Saturday, March 23, and the Sheriff’s Officer alerted the public the next day.

Authorities have not said what type of illness occurred; however, it was described as brief and not requiring further medical care.

The detention center’s operations are continuing as normal, with a “heightened level of awareness” on those feeling unwell.

“The well-being of our residents is a top priority,” said Sheriff Garry McFadden. “We are taking this situation seriously and are taking the steps to ensure the health and safety of everyone. I will continue to monitor the situation closely and will adjust procedures as needed.”
