'I'm not a nationalist, but...' — Russian lawmaker says women shouldn't have sex with foreign World Cup fans

Every four years, the World Cup calls fans from around the world to come together to root for their nation and to see who truly is the greatest at the game.

It inspires a lot of celebration, and with every celebration, there’s bound to be … hanky-panky.

Parliament’s families committee chairwoman, Tamara Pletnyova, has asked Russian women not to have sex with any foreign men and said that any “inappropriate behavior of Russian women” will lead to “nothing good.”

Pletnyova was referencing the Moscow Olympics of 1980 when she said, “Their children will suffer for it. They’ve suffered in the past, since the Soviet period.”

Perhaps she was worried that the women would face a future of single parenthood, but then the lawmaker said that it would be fine if they slept with foreigners who were the same race. “It’s good if they’re one race, but if they’re of a different race, then it’s worse. We should bear our own children. I’m not a nationalist, but all the same.”

This isn’t the first time she has voiced conservative views. Pletnyova, whose committee also handles women and children’s rights, said that the female journalist who accused one of her colleagues of sexual assault should dress more conservatively, or even quit.

She said in March, “Those who get harassed are probably the ones who want it themselves and give the occasion for it.”

Pletnyova could have avoided saying “don’t have sex with foreigners” and giving off a “nationalist” vibe with her rhetoric if she had just discussed contraceptives instead. Take a lesson from soccer itself: The net always has a goalie.
