Illinois unemployment rate slightly increased for Jan. 2024

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — New data shows unemployment is slightly up at the start of 2024 for Illinois.

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Illinois Department of Employment Security for the year ending in January 2024 showed the unemployment rate increase across all 14 metropolitan areas for the state.

Total non-farm jobs increased in eight areas of Illinois, decreased in five areas and stayed the same for the Danville metropolitan area.

The Bloomington and Champaign-Urbana metropolitan areas had the largest increases of jobs since Jan. 2023, with a 3.8% and 2.1% increases respectively. The largest decreases of non-farm jobs over-the-year were the Springfield area with a 2.7% decrease and the Decatur area with a 2.5% decrease.

State leaders said anyone looking for a job in Illinois should use IDES’ resources.

The largest industry increases in jobs across metropolitan areas are Education and Health Services and Government which both increased in twelve areas; and Financial Activities which increased in eight areas.
