Illinois State Police vehicle struck by driver on I-55 near Litchfield
LITCHFIELD, Ill. – An Illinois State Police trooper’s squad car was struck on Interstate 55 in Macoupin County while the trooper was assisting motorists who were involved in a prior crash.
The crash happened around 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, in the northbound lanes of I-55 near milepost 45.8, just south of Litchfield.
An ISP spokesperson claims the trooper blocked a lane of traffic with his vehicle and had his emergency lights activated. A white Toyota struck the vehicle from behind.

The trooper and the driver of the Toyota, a 76-year-old Springfield, Illinois, man, were uninjured. The driver of the Toyota was cited under the state’s Move Over Law for failure to yield to stationary emergency vehicles and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
The Illinois State Police have recorded 13 Move Over Law-related crashes in 2024, with five troopers injured. ISP had 21 Move Over Law-related crashes and 13 troopers injured last year.
