CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) — Illinois football has another opening on its staff. Outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen is heading back to the NFL after just one season with the Illini, signed by the New York Giants on Wednesday. Bullen will also coach OLBs with the Giants, returning to pro ball, where he spent the more than a decade between the Cardinals (2019-22) and Dolphins (2012-18).

The departure means the Illini have three vacancies, with head coach Bret Bielema looking for a wide receivers coach, along with both inside and outside linebackers. George McDonald (WR) left earlier this month to take the same position at Ole Miss, while Bielema elected to fire Andy Buh (ILB) and Antonio Fenelus (DB). David Gibbs replaced Fenelus, coming to Champaign from UCF.

Only three assistant coaches remain from Bielema’s original staff in 2021, Aaron Henry (promoted from DBs coach to defensive coordinator), Terrance Jamison (DL) and Bart Miller (OL).
