Illinois grandfather opens Illinois iLottery app and discovers he’s a millionaire

CHICAGO — An Illinois grandfather was at home on a recent Saturday night when he decided to open the Illinois iLottery app on his electronic device.

And discovered he was a millionaire.

Illinois could change how tipped workers are paid under a proposed House bill

The man, who has chosen to remain anonymous, found out that he had purchased a $1 million Powerball ticket for the Saturday, March 30, drawing, the Illinois Lottery said Tuesday in a news release.

The winning numbers were 12-13-33-50-52. The man had matched all five, which he only discovered when he went on his Illinois iLottery app to buy a ticket for another drawing.

“I quickly scrolled through my account history, just to make sure I hadn’t already bought one for that night’s drawing,” he said, according to the release. “That’s when I saw an older ticket in my account saying, ‘You’re A Winner!’ and I clicked on it.

“I couldn’t believe my luck when it said I won a million dollars.”

Just to make sure, the man said he had his wife read it off.

“When my wife got home, I asked her to read my winning prize amount out loud,” he said. “That’s when it finally started to sink in a little bit that this was, in fact, real.”

When asked what he would do with the extra money in his pocket, the man laughed and told the Illinois Lottery he has plenty of special people to spend it on.

And perhaps a “magical” destination on where to spend some of it.

“I have four grandkids, and they’re definitely spoiled,” the winner said. “They enjoy traveling, and I’d love to treat them to something fun.

“I’m thinking of taking them to Disney World for a magical experience. I’ve never been myself, so it’ll be a fun trip for the whole family!”
