Illini Insider | Summer language learning program makes a comeback

Apr. 2—The Intensive Language Instruction Program will be back this May after a hiatus over the last few years.

(You may remember it as the Intensive Foreign Language Instruction Program — the name has been changed slightly.)

The course is open to UI students, staff, faculty and the general public and includes 13 languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Korean, Latin, Modern Greek, Polish, Spanish, Swahili, Ukrainian and Wolof.

Those are all at the beginner level, but you can also take Chinese and Spanish at an intermediate level and Spanish at an advanced level.

Since the classes only run for two weeks, they're pretty intense: each meets for three hours a day Monday-Friday, May 13-24.

However, there is no attendance policy and very little homework since the course is not eligible for college credit.

The idea is that you will get 30 hours of exposure to your chosen language within a short time span so you can absorb as much as possible.

The course is $200 for the general public, $150 for K-12 teachers, UI students and spouses, and $175 for UI faculty, staff and retirees.

ILIP does qualify as ISBE Professional Development Hours for K-12 educators.
