Illegal handgun, fireworks seized in San Mateo robbery bust

(KRON) — Three suspects were arrested, and an illegal pistol and fireworks were seized in a robbery arrest, the San Mateo Police Department announced Monday. The suspects were arrested on Friday in connection to a robbery back in December.

On Dec. 22, at around 5:55 p.m., San Mateo PD got a 9-1-1 call about a fight near San Mateo High School. Officers responded to the scene and spoke to a victim.

Police learned the victim was assaulted by three suspects, punched by a suspect with brass knuckles and had his jewelry stolen. The victim, police said, suffered multiple injuries and was taken to the hospital.

An investigation into the incident was taken over by the San Mateo PD Crime Reduction Unit (CRU). Over the next few months, the CRU identified the three suspects in the robbery and obtained search and arrest warrants for each of them.

The suspects were identified as 20-year-old Josh Ferri and two juvenile males, ages 16 and 17.

On Friday, San Mateo PD, with the assistance of the Foster City Police Department, arrested the suspects and served the search warrants. Ferri was located in San Mateo along with the 17-year-old. Both were arrested.

The 16-year-old was located at San Francisco International Airport and also arrested.

Ferri was booked into San Mateo County Jail. The two juveniles were booked into Hillcrest Juvenile Detention Facility. Officers searched the suspects’ residences and found an unregistered, illegal pistol, illegal drugs and evidence of drug sales, and over 1,400 pounds of dangerous illegal fireworks.

Charges for the suspects were as follows:

  • Joshua Ferri, 20, of Foster City: 2nd-degree robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit a crime, own a firearm without a serial number, possess narcotics for sale, possess marijuana for sale, provide fireworks to unlicensed person, possess dangerous fireworks

  • 17-year-old male of San Mateo: 2nd-degree robbery, assault with deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit a crime

  • 16-year-old male of Foster City: 2nd-degree robbery, assault with deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit a crime, possess metal knuckles

Despite the arrests, the investigation remains ongoing, police said.
