After the reported deaths of two dogs, IKEA is recalling 16,700 water dispensers sold in the United States for a suffocation hazard. The $7.99 product from the Swedish retailer's recently-launched pet line featured a large, clear well that replenished a drinking bowl as needed.

However, the inverted tank can entrap smaller dogs and cats' heads and poses a major safety risk. IKEA is now urging all customers to stop using the dispensers immediately and return them for a full refund.

While no longer available in stores or online, the water dispenser was sold in U.S. stores between October 2017 and June 2018. If you think you may own one, you can double check by looking for the article number 303.775.72 printed on a sticker on the bottom of the bowl, a press release states. IKEA Canada is recalling an additional 17,767 units sold across the border.

According to the company's website, the Lurvig collection was designed with the assistance of veterinarian Dr. Barbara Schäfer, who works with product risk assessment at IKEA. The line also includes beds, leashes, toys, and other pet products unaffected by the recall.

"We know that pets are important and loved family members for many of our customers," IKEA executive Petra Axdorff said in a statement. "At IKEA, the safety and security of our products is our top priority."

For more information about the recall, you can contact IKEA at (888) 966-4532. You do not need to provide a receipt or proof of purchase to claim your refund, but the most important thing is to stop using this dispenser ASAP. No level of convenience is worth putting your best friend's life at risk.
