IDEM: Soil at spot of rollover spill at 'pre-incident levels'

May 23—The Indiana Department of Environmental Management released a report on the soil at the site of a spill from March 25, and concluded the soil at the crash site has returned to "pre-incident levels."

The Cass County Emergency Management Agency along with other public safety agencies responded to a semi rollover on County Road 225 South on March 25. Agencies discovered spilled material at the site, which was later identified as electric arc furnace dust.

The vehicle, owned by Gardner Transport Services, Inc., was transporting the material from Nucor Steel Crawfordsville to Waelz Sustainable Products (WSP).

The IDEM Emergency Response team provided technical assistance and helped determine what mitigation steps, if any, would need to be performed by the responsible party to ensure responsible cleanup in accordance with state and federal standards.

"Responders were able to contain the material at the scene, preventing it from impacting the waterway," IDEM's report said. "A cleanup contractor worked to remove the truck and any remaining material from the scene.

"Impacted layers of soil were also removed from the location. IDEM required the responsible party and cleanup contractor to conduct confirmatory soil sampling to ensure compliant remediation. After multiple rounds of collection and sampling, results indicate soil at the crash site has returned to pre-incident levels."
