Iconic Vogue supermodel cover turns 26

In 1990, UK Vogue portrayed five young models on the cover of its January issue – Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, Christy Turlington, and Cindy Crawford. The photograph was taken by iconic fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh, and he became instrumental in launching the careers of the aforementioned models. That Vogue cover marked the beginning of the ‘supermodel’ era.

The youngest of them was Naomi, aged 20 then, and the oldest, Linda, at 25.

It was the time when supermodels, according to Linda Evangelista, “don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day.” Those girls exuded power, reigning the ramp during the 90s.

These days, Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid are also regarded supermodels, but according to popular opinion, neither of them have the charisma and allure of the supermodels of the 90s. Naomi, Cindy, Christy, Linda and Tatjana – they all had varying physical features, and looked stunning in their own ways.

Lindbergh shared the iconic Vogue cover on his Instagram account on Jan 2 – the day Christy Turlington celebrated her 47th birthday.

Twenty six years on, all of them, saving for Tatjana Patitz, more or less remain in the scene. Tatjana receded into oblivion during her heydays itself, getting exhausted with the crazy schedules and travelling associated with her work. She keeps a low profile even now, and her Instagram profile reflects her love for animals and nature.
