Iconic Virgen de Guadalupe mural vandalized in Lower Valley

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The iconic Virgen de Guadalupe mural in the Lower Valley was vandalized over the weekend.

The mural, located at Alameda and Zaragoza near the Ysleta Mission, had its necklace and cuffs painted over with bright white paint.

The mural has been repainted several times since El Paso artist Mario Colin initially painted it nearly 30 years ago.

Another one of Colin’s Virgen De Guadalupe murals, located in Central El Paso off Piedras Street, was vandalized in 2023 and was restored by local artist Victor Hernandez, who assisted Colin when he first painted the mural.
