ICC approves replacement of two Decatur railroad signals

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Two railroad crossing devices in Decatur are getting an upgrade after the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) recently approved the projects.

Crossings “AAR/DOT #292858Y” and “#291241P” along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive will soon be replaced. The ICC said the devices are outdated.

“Keeping Illinoisans safe on and alongside train tracks is a top priority for the ICC,” said ICC Commissioner Michael T. Carrigan. “The Grade Crossing Protection Fund enables local governments and railroads across Illinois to make much-needed safety improvements to their rail infrastructure.”

Moving forward, the ICC recommended using the Grade Crossing Protection Fund to pay 95% of the cost of each location’s replacement, which will collectively round out to almost $1 million total. The money will go towards the design and installation of new flashing light signals and crossing gates. Illinois Central will pay the remaining 5% of the project costs, as well as any future maintenance.

The fund could also be used towards replacing all the City’s old traffic control equipment, their fiber optic connections, new interconnect cabling, and blank out signs. To receive the Grade Crossing Protection Fund, these projects could not exceed $239,850, the ICC said.

ICC officials stated that all work must be finished within the next 18 months.
