New Iberia police officers receive awards after saving woman from burning home

IBERIA PARISH, La. (KLFY) — Five New Iberia police officers were given lifesaving awards after their part in saving a woman’s life from a burning home.

Officers Marek Mason and Evan Dowling were notified of a house fire on Monday down the street from where they were stationed near the 600 block of Lombard. Flora Ledet lives down the street from the burning home. She says a neighbor went into the house and saw the woman on the ground. “The lady was laid down on the floor and he kept calling,” she said. “That’s when he called the black boy to go call that cop on the side over there,” says Ledet.

Body camera footage shows the entire event as the officers went through the back door and found the woman unresponsive. Officers Mason and Dowling, along with Sgt. Jacob Richard, began life saving measures. Sgt. Richard decided to take the woman to the hospital instead of waiting for an ambulance. Behind the scenes were communications officers Lyrical Robicheaux and Jade Hartweck keeping everyone informed of the situation.

Sgt. Richard credits their training for the ability to take action. “If we didn’t have the training these guys send us to, we wouldn’t have anything they keep us up to par they keep us up to the up-to-date training. Training falls back on everything we come back to train these guys so they can fall back and have the knowledge they need to make the decisions that need to be made in a split second,” says Sgt. Richard.

New Iberia Police Chief Todd D’Albor says the department has been in contact with the victim and says she is in stable condition.
