Iberia Parish School Board to partner with Crime Stoppers to enhance school safety

IBERIA PARISH, La. (KLFY) — In Iberia Parish, the school board is looking to take extra safety measures for students. The board has established a partnership with Crime Stoppers to help students report crimes going on in and out of school though what is known as the Safe Schools LA app.

“Partnering with Crime Stoppers just gives us the opportunity to add another layer of protection, and that’s what it is about,” Iberia Parish Superintendent Heath Hulin said.

Instead of going to a school official to report a crime, a student can safely report any kind of activity on the app. Crime Stoppers will have someone staffed 24/7 to monitor the tips and determine how legit it is and if it needs immediate attention.

“A lot of times kids want to say something, but they don’t want to be seen walking into the office,” Hulin said. “They don’t want to be seen talking to the principal. This will just give them a platform to be able to have that communication. We’re going to encourage them. If you see something, say something.”

Hulin said the board is establishing plans to get students familiar with the app and how they can get access to what he believes is going to be a game changer in the future school safety.

“We’re probably going to have some assemblies and some trainings with our seventh through 12th grade students to let them know how it works, how they can operated, how they can access the app,” Hulin said.

Hulin said the board is moving quickly to help implement program to allow access to the app in august of next school year.
