Hussman Institute donates 500 sensory kits to Prince George’s County Police Department for Autism Awareness Month

PRINCE GEOGRE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — As Autism Awareness Month drew to a close, the Hussman Institute for Autism donated 500 sensory kits to the Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD).

Officials said that the kits will help give police tools to help respond to situations where people with autism may be involved.

The kits include written guidance, letter boards, headphones to block out noise, sunglasses for those with light sensitivities and toys to help relieve anxiety and stress.

“[It will help] our officers understand the unique needs of autistic children in providing these sensory kits. [It] can help create a more supportive interaction under traumatic circumstances,” PGPD Chief Malik Aziz said.

One in 36 children has autism, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
