Hurricane Dorian, college football, Labor Day: 5 things you need to know Monday

Have a peaceful and profitable Labor Day

Monday marks the 125th anniversary of Labor Day. In 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed an act making the first Monday in September each year a legal holiday dedicated to the achievements of American workers. (Congress wanted to reach out to the labor movement in the wake of the bitter Pullman strike that sparked violence in cities across the USA.) Nowadays, the holiday is better known for picnics, parades – and shopping. While some businesses close for Labor Day, many others – including most major retailers – will stay open. Labor Day typically sees good deals on home decor, so if you're looking to spruce up for fall, there's a sale out there for you.

Dorian continues to march toward East Coast

Hurricane Dorian blasted across the Bahamas in a record-setting way on Sunday, tying an 84-year-old record for the most powerful Atlantic hurricane to come ashore as it continued its unrelenting march toward the U.S. East Coast. The National Hurricane Center said the storm was driving sustained winds of 185 mph, with gusts exceeding 220 mph. Dorian's slow crawl, estimated at about 5 mph on Sunday afternoon, placed it within 175 miles of West Palm Beach, Florida. Millions of people from South Florida to North Carolina were on alert and preparing for the worst. Even if Dorian does not make landfall in Florida, the effects will be felt beginning around Monday evening when Florida's Melbourne and Palm Bay areas can expect tropical storm winds, said Ed Rappaport, deputy director at the National Hurricane Center.

Osaka and Nadal are top draws for U.S. Open

It sure will be difficult to match the emotional aftermath of her previous match. World No. 1 and defending champion Naomi Osaka, who dominated Coco Gauff in straight sets (6-3, 6-0) in the third round of the U.S. Open Saturday night, takes on 13th-seeded Belinda Bencic of Switzerland on Monday (12 p.m. ET) with a quarterfinal berth at stake. After Saturday's match, Osaka and Gauff shared a wonderful and authentic moment of sportsmanship at Arthur Ashe Stadium as Osaka consoled Gauff and convinced the 15-year-old to join her for a tearful post-match interview. On the men's side, three-time champion Rafael Nadal and 2014 title winner Marin Cilic — the only past Grand Slam champs in their half of the draw — face each other (7 p.m. ET) in the fourth round.

Notre Dame vs. Louisville wraps up opening weekend

No. 9 Notre Dame wraps up Week 1 of the college football slate against Louisville at 8 p.m. ET (ESPN). The Fighting Irish are coming off a season in which their only loss was to Clemson in the College Football Playoff semifinals. Notre Dame should be a force yet again, but it will face eight opponents coming off bye weeks this season, so teams will be ready for them. Louisville went 2-10 last season and is looking like the worst team in the ACC this year.

Death toll rises in Texas shooting

The death toll rose to seven Sunday after a gunman's rampage that left many more injured following what began as a routine traffic stop Saturday in Odessa, Texas. Police Chief Michael Gerke, at a news conference Sunday, said the victims ranged in age from 15 to 57. The 22 wounded at 15 crime scenes included three police officers and a 17-month old child, he said. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott read a statement from the parents of the 17-month-old child thanking everyone for their prayers. They said their daughter will have surgery Monday to remove shrapnel from her chest and fix her lip. The assault took place one day before a series, of gun law changes in the state that ease restrictions on where Texans can carry or store firearms, from foster homes to churches.
