Huntsville City Council approves $7 million construction project for Martin Road Recreation Center

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Something never before seen in West Huntsville will soon be established after city leaders approved a $7 million construction project that’ll see the first-ever recreation center built in that part of the city.

The Huntsville City Council met in the new city hall for the first time and unanimously approved an agreement with Chorba Contracting Corporation to build the Martin Road Recreation Center.

The 27,000-square-foot facility will be located on Martin Road just west of Zierdt Road and will include gymnasiums, meeting rooms, outdoor pickleball courts, and programs for the community.

Officials say as Huntsville continues to grow so does its needs and the western portion of the city has experienced a significant increase in its population over the last few years.

People living there like Timothy Young feel West Huntsville has been neglected for some time, but after asking for the recreation center for years, their requests are about to pay off.

“We’re glad to see some attention being paid to us, it’s definitely something that we need down here,” Young told News 19.

With West Huntsville being the city’s largest district, some say it’s a huge deal for people on the western side of Redstone Arsenal.

Amanda Pettit, a mom who lives there says the facility is going to be substantial and will benefit families looking to get their children involved in extracurricular activities.

“I have 2 three-year-olds, a set of boy-girl twins, and we would definitely be using that recreation center I’m sure they’ll have many different programs that we can definitely use,” Pettit said.

Community members say they’re thankful for Huntsville City Councilman John Meredith who presides over the district who along with others helped facilitate the project.

The building cost for the Martin Road Recreation Center will be a total of $7,497,058 and construction will begin right away with completion aimed for early 2025.

The city also approved a $240,000 project that’ll see the Von Braun Center undergo major renovations to its North Hall and the Playhouse Theatre.
