Hunt County food and shelter programs can now apply for supplemental funding from U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security

Apr. 5—Hunt County was recently selected to receive $45,168 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency to help supplement various county organization's food and shelter programs.

The County was selected to receive the funds by FEMA's national board, which consists of representatives from the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A., The Jewish Federations of North America, The Salvation Army and United Way Worldwide.

Now, a local board — made up of representatives of the Salvation Army, United Way of Hunt County, American Red Cross, Greenville Housing Authority, Carevide, Hunt County Veteran Services and other organizations — is charged with distributing funds to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in the area.

Public and private voluntary agencies interested in receiving supplemental funding for their food and shelter programs can receive an application by contacting Berniece Brown at (903) 455-5958. The deadline to submit the application is April 22.

To be considered for the supplemental funding, organizations will have to fit the following requirements:

—Be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government;

—Be eligible to receive federal funds;

—Have an accounting system;

—Practice nondiscrimination;

—Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and;

—If they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board.
