Hung jury in trial of man accused on attempted murder in 2020 Champaign shooting

Mar. 21—URBANA — A Champaign County jury was unable to arrive at a verdict Wednesday in the trial of a Champaign man charged with attempted murder in a May 2020 shooting that left another man partially paralyzed.

Jurors deliberated for eight hours but failed to render a verdict for Coreyon A. Duncan, 35, charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm in the May 26, 2020, shooting of a then-31-year-old man outside a house in the 3200 block of Ridgewood Drive.

Presenting their case Tuesday, prosecutors said Duncan shot the man several times around 8 p.m. that Tuesday in 2020. The victim survived but was partially paralyzed.

In closing arguments Wednesday, Assistant State's Attorney Brooke Hinman noted that while the victim was receiving first aid, he told a police officer "Coreyon Duncan" shot him. A recording of a jailhouse interview also showed that a man who was apparently at the shooting told a detective Duncan was the shooter.

In closing arguments, Public Defender Elisabeth Pollock noted the witness told the detective Duncan was driving a red car when the shooting took place, but video from a surveillance camera captured someone shooting the man while standing in front of him as a red car drove out from a house's driveway.

Other evidence presented Tuesday showed Duncan knew the shooting victim , that a cellphone tied to him pinged a tower near the shooting near the time it took place, and that he fled to Nevada .
