DE PERE, Wis. (WFRV) – Hundreds gathered at West De Pere High School to raise awareness for those who have been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

Whether they were supporting a family member or friends, everyone who walked at the event Sunday morning has somehow been impacted by MS.

Cory Kiekhaefer from Reedsville was diagnosed with MS back in 2007. While his journey has come with challenges, he says he would not be anywhere without the support of his family.

“I appreciate [my family] coming out. I walk around and I look at people and I see that I’m fortunate to be where I am and walk with fellow MS peoples,” Kiekhaefer says.

As a state with one of the highest percentages of people living with MS in the country, the National MS Society hopes walks like these will one day lead to a cure.

President of the Wisconsin chapter of the organization Rob Multerer says, “Walk MS is all about love and community, and you see that here. There are so many people here for their friends, family members, coworkers, colleagues. It’s just so great to see all the support on not the most beautiful of days, but MS is not beautiful either.”

The hundreds of people at the event were also fundraising for the organization.
So far, the organization has raised more than 40,000 toward MS research, with the hope to double the total by the end of September.

The Wisconsin chapter will also be hosting another walk in Door County at the end of September. To learn more about the organization, click here.
