Humza Yousaf has been elected as the new leader of the SNP and will take over from Nicola Sturgeon as first minister of Scotland.

The Health Secretary narrowly saw off challenges from Kate Forbes and Ash Regan after a bitter five-week battle.

Although he was unable to secure the top job in the first round of voting, Mr Yousaf beat Ms Forbes, our readers’ favourite, by 52.1 per cent to 47.9 per cent in the second round.

Many readers expressed their disappointment at the result, viewing Mr Yousaf as the “continuity” candidate. Others see his win more optimistically, believing his appointment will reduce support for the SNP.
