Humboldt Broncos player injured in bus crash commits to play college hockey

Kaleb Dahlgren is ready to get back on the ice.

After being injured in the Humbolt Broncos bus crash in April, Dahlgren officially committed to York University in Toronto on Friday, where he plans to play hockey again.

“Reaching this goal has always driven me on and off the ice, however it has taken on an new importance since April 6, 2018: to play hard and live life for my fellow teammates, for my coaches … for everyone who lost their life that day, and for all those whose lives have been forever changed by the Broncos tragedy,” Dahlgren wrote on Twitter on Friday. “I will honour their legacy in all I do as I carve my own path forward at York, on the ice and off, doing my best to always remain #humboldtstrong.”

The Humboldt Broncos team bus collided with a semi-trailer in rural Saskatchewan on April 6, killing 16 people and injuring 13 players. Dahlgren, 20, suffered a fractured skull, a puncture wound in his head, a brain injury and six broken vertebrae in his neck and back in the accident, according to the Canadian Press.

Dahlgren is still recovering from his injuries, and plans to attend York in the fall — however the university told him that he can start whenever he is ready.

York went 22–15 last season, and reached the OUA Bronze Medal game.
