Human remains found near Carbonton Road

Feb. 13—Human remains were found Friday afternoon on land in the area of Carbonton and Pickard roads, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

A couple who was interested in purchasing the property, located in northwestern Lee County, discovered the remains about 1 p.m., a sheriff's office news release said.

The Lee County medical examiner and EMS workers from Central Carolina Hospital recovered the remains.

It was not possible to determine the sex, race or other identifying characteristics, the release said. The remains will be sent to the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to ascertain the identity and determine the cause of death.

The remains were found within a half-mile from 96 Pickard Road where 32-year-old Cory Moore was last seen about 2 p.m. on Sept. 3, 2020, the release said.

Law enforcement and rescue personnel scoured the largely rural area after Moore was reported missing, but found no sign of him.

Friends and family had searched for Moore for a week before reporting him missing.

Family members said Moore, the father of 4-year-old twins and a 3-year-old daughter, had just returned to Sanford after leaving a drug rehab facility.

Moore had battled drug addiction, his aunt, Sherri Galvin-Bellamy, said in September 2020. He was reported to be doing well, she said, but then disappeared.
