Hughes, AR police department designated not in compliance, removed from service

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Hughes Police Department has been designated as inactive and removed from service, per the Arkansas Department of Public Safety.

In a statement made to WREG by Cindy Murphy, the Communications Director at the Arkansas Department of Public Safety, the department was not in compliance with law enforcement training standards.

The Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training defines an inactive law enforcement agency as one that “existed and operated under state law or local ordinance in the past but that currently does not exist or has not operated for at least six months.”

Last week, WREG did a story about a former Hughes police chief getting into an altercation with an Arkansas resident at the Mayor’s office.

There has been no confirmation that the incident is connected to the Police Department’s inactive designation.

WREG will update this story as more information becomes available.
