HSPPR saves dog that ate lotion bottle

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) helped diagnose and save a dog who had a lotion bottle lodged in her stomach before it was too late.

According to HSPPR, their staff knew something was wrong with the pup, named Karma, when she came in to the clinic. HSPPR said Karma couldn’t keep any food or water down and was very uncomfortable being handled.

After taking x-rays, HSPPR said the team’s worst fears were confirmed–Karma had something lodged in her stomach.

Karma was immediately scheduled for emergency foreign body surgery, where HSPPR said surgeons found the top half of a plastic lotion bottle. It was found not a moment too soon, as HSPPR said the bottle was starting to cause severe bruising and trauma to Karma’s stomach.

“If she didn’t get the surgery when she did, Karma might not have made it,” HSPPR said.

Due to the severity of her condition, HSPPR said Karma had to spend an extra night in the clinic to ensure she was healing properly, but the extra care proved all the difference for this pup. By the next morning, HSPPR said Karma was up and greeting staff at the door and showering her heroes with kisses.

“Karma is now in a home with a family who loves her dearly, and her story marks another incredible Happy Tail in the books!” HSPPR said.

HSPPR also praised the assistance of the Colorado Pet Overpopulation Fund and its Adopt-a-Shelter-Pet License Plate Grant. You may have seen these license plates on cars around Colorado, with a pet’s paw in the center of the plate. Learn more about the license plate program here.

Funds raised through that program continue to provide emergent and daily medical care to pets in need, HSPPR said.
