HQ Trivia game moves to massive stakes for NBA Finals

HQ Trivia has caught fire since it launched last October, with players obsessed over the app battling for what are generally small cash payouts.

The game, played live twice daily on a smartphone app, is simple. Answer 12 trivia questions in a row correctly, and split the cash prize with everyone else who answers perfectly.

The cash prizes have generally been small, ranging from $1,000 to $18,000 during its first few months, according to “Money.” Again, that cash prize doesn’t go to everyone who wins. Everyone who wins splits that prize.

The payouts have often been small. People enjoy the game and host Scott Rogowsky so much that it’s become a hit with or without a big payout.

Here’s guessing that won’t be a problem during the NBA Finals. HQ announced on Wednesday it will offer massive cash prizes during the Finals.

Starting with Thursday’s Game 1, HQ will give away a six-figure payout that coincides with the number of the game being played, CNET reports. So for Game 1, winners will split $100,000. For Game 2, winners will split $200,000. You can probably do the math from here, up to a potential massive prize if the series goes to seven games.

With Las Vegas placing massive odds against the Cleveland Cavaliers making it an actually competitive series with the Golden State Warriors, here’s guessing the game’s funders are betting against making those biggest of payouts.

This is not the first promotion of its kind. HQ paired up with the Steven Spielberg movie “Ready Player One” in March to give away $250,000. In April, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson hosted as the game awarded $300,000.

With a minimum of four NBA Finals games, HQ is guaranteed to surpass that mark.
