Howell Police deem threatening email sent to administrators as apparent hoax

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– The Howell Police Department has determined the threatening emails sent to the Howell High School administrative staff, were likely not from the U.S.

Howell Public Schools are closed for Tuesday, May 21, 2024, after a threat was sent to several Howell High School administrators this morning.

School officials say an investigation quickly began as soon as the first administrator saw the email.

The Howell Police Department says they were notified of the email that indicated a threat to commit “the biggest mass shooting in Michigan History”. Police say the threat was not made by a Howell student or was directed to any specific school.

At this time, police believe the source of the email is likely to not be from the United States. They say it appears to be similar to ‘SWATTING’ that takes place nationally.

The definition of ‘Swatting’ is the practice of making a prank call to emergency services in an attempt to bring about the dispatch of a large number of armed police officers to a particular address.

“We are aware of the apprehension and frustration that these threats may cause but know that everyone involved in this matter immediately responded to ensure the safety of our community,” said The Howell Police Department.

“We continue to urge parents to be aware of their children’s online activities as this incident appears to have connections to online gaming and social media activities.”
