How to eat healthy for less money

Remake America

Eating healthy doesn't have to be expensive. ABC Chief Health and Medical Editor Dr. Richard Besser says to remember the three P’s for eating better for less money:

  • Plan: Create a weekly meal plan based on your weekly budget and shop for ingredients in your menus. Using in-season produce will cost less than out-of-season produce.
  • Purchase: Don't go to the store hungry; you’ll buy more than you need. Stick to the edges of the store, where there are more fresh foods, such as fruits, vegetables and meats. Frozen fruits and vegetables are good for you too. Be wary of coupons: Often they are not for the healthiest products.
  • Prepare: Home-cooked food is the best. And when you make soups and casseroles, you can freeze some of them for a future meal. No matter what you cook from scratch, Besser says, it will be better for your health in the long haul than fast food.
