Houston grad transfer King threw/ran for 50 TDs in 2018. He’s about to visit Miami

He set the American Athletic Conference touchdowns-responsible-for-in-a-season record for Houston in 2018 with 50 — 36 passing and 14 rushing. And that was despite missing the last two-plus games with an injury.

He was one of only three quarterbacks in FBS history with at least 35 passing touchdowns and 13 rushing touchdowns.

Now D’Eriq King, who announced late Tuesday night that he entered the transfer portal, is about to visit the quarterback-transfer-seeking Miami Hurricanes, a source confirmed to the Miami Herald on Thursday after 247Sports first reported the upcoming visit.

King, listed as 5-11 and 195 on his Houston bio, is a grad transfer who will be on UM’s campus beginning Friday. He recently followed new UM offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee on Twitter. Lashlee is bringing his highly successful, up-tempo spread offense to the Hurricanes, and King would no doubt be a huge get.

King was a senior this past season, but decided to cut short his season after four games so he could use it as a redshirt year and either return to Houston in 2020 or transfer, though he never said he would definitively transfer. At that point, Houston, which finished 4-8, was 1-3. The move by King was debated and criticized among college football analysts, but considered the new (or at least up-and-coming) normal in the college game.

King finished 58 of 110 this past season for 663 yards and six touchdowns, with two interceptions. He rushed 55 times for 312 yards (5.7 yards per carry) and another six touchdowns.

In 2018, King was 219 of 345 (63 percent) for 2,982 yards and his 36 touchdowns, with six interceptions. He also had 111 carries for 674 yards (6.1 yards per carry).

His Houston career numbers passing: 369 of 597 (62 percent) for 4,925 yards and 50 touchdowns, with 10 interceptions.

His Houston career rushing numbers: 253 carries for 1,421 yards (5.6 average) and 28 touchdowns.

King also reportedly is eyeing LSU, Oregon, Arkansas and Ole Miss, per 247Sports.

Part of UM’s offensive woes this season were due to poor play by its offensive line, which allowed 51 sacks. But the quarterback play was inconsistent, and starter Jarren Williams, who had school-record breaking numbers against Louisville, regressed the last three games — all losses to what should have been overmatched competition.

King, from Manvel, Texas, was a four-star recruit by ESPN.
